Laurence and Chico presented their Spring/Summer 2019 designs at the New York Fashion Show at the Chelsea Piers Fitness center. What really stood out from other shows was the presentation and the delivery of these pieces of art. To say the Laurence and Chico SS19 show was over the top is an understatement.

Designers Laurence Li and Chico Wang invited Miss J Alexander to provide commentary and open the show in a loud conceptual piece consisting of a black mesh blazer, long purple tiered tulle skirt and neon green and orange skirt cage. This first look definitely set the wacky and outrageous tone of the show.

The duo has been known to delve into theatrical concepts which explained a lot of the looks that appeared to be purely runway drama and had models voguing down the runway. Highlights included a black and orange dress with sleeve ties in the back, a pink and black top and bottom set, and a pink coat with shearling and mesh panels. There were a lot of interesting – and somewhat wearable ideas that constructed, deconstructed, or repurposed sportswear. The themes of this show were definitely purple, neon, platforms, mesh, exaggerated layering, and tulle. Lots of it.

Exaggerated layering embraces over-the-top couture.

Let’s take a look at some of the runway stills. Would you wear any of these outfits to the gym?
